Nine years ago I graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. I promptly set out to find a reliable job with a 401(k) and good dental benefits. While graphic design has been paying the bills, my first true love—the very one that led me into the design field—has always been drawing.
In 2008, I jumped at the chance to rent studio space at the B-Complex. My artwork is evolving as a narrative medium—from the first drawings to the current collages.
I keep a canvas wall up in my studio that I use for free association. It’s sort of my creative warm-up before the real exercise begins. Every addition leads the mural in new and potentially discordant directions. Guests to the studio are invited to enrich the story by adding their own perspectives and leaving their own mark. It is essentially a grand collage.
We are all collages of our cumulative experiences. So it seemed a natural medium for portraiture. “You Know the Way to My Heart,” the first in the series of portraits, was created for my partner’s birthday. It celebrates our shared experiences and reflects his passion for alternative transportation.
I am inspired by my own wild dreams, WWII-era tattoo design, Robert Rauschenberg, Vincent Van Gogh, cowboys, and American gay culture.
I divide my time between freelancing as a graphic designer and hiding out in the studio with my dog, Clyde.
You’re invited to step into my head any time to see new work, learn about upcoming shows, commission original pieces, or set up viewing appointments at my studio.
